This is the U.S. Army Air Service 103rd Aero Squadron operational log that was recorded in France during World War I. The original handwritten logbook is currently held by the SDASM Archives. 

The 103rd was a pursuit (fighter) squadron that operated in France during World War I from February 18, 1918, until after the November 11, 1918, Armistice. It was the first American operational pursuit squadron in the war, as well as the longest serving. 

This squadron was also unique in that its original complement of pilots was made up mostly of Americans who had recently transferred to the U.S. Air Service from various French squadrons, most notably the famed Lafayette Escadrille. Because the 103rd Aero Squadron is the direct U.S. descendant of the Lafayette Escadrille, it is also sometimes (inaccurately) referred to as the Lafayette Escadrille

This Logbook contains a record of the flight operations of the squadron, including hours flown and a narrative about each day's activities. Some of these reports, listed as the "Nature of Patrol" are quite interesting and detailed.
